Can anybody point me to evidence supporting the claim that local governments have more interaction with citizens than central government?
thanks

Kable did some research into this ages ago. When you say “more interaction” I think its fair to say “an order of magnitude more interaction – LG has several billion to CG’s several hundred million. I think the old CITU did something on this also.

Hi David, first of all this depends on the government structure, that is are you interested in a federal or central state? Now there are a few papers and some official documents (e.g. some by the German and Austrian government) that state that average Joe citizen interacts 1.4 times p.a. with their government. Mostly on the local level. You might also want to take a look at Coulters work on citizen contacting. For more, just let me know. I should have some papers I could send to you if you like. You know my email anyways. Next time I am in Brussels we should meet and discuss things like your UN participation.

William – thanks that is precisely what I would need. if you come across document please let me know
Alexander: the geographical context is OECD countries, so both centralized and decentralized. Actually, any kind of evidence would do good at this stage. When you say “mostly at local level”, this is where I am looking for specific evidence. So please do send me any relevant docs. I’ll look for coulters. Meet you in brussels whenever!

Hi, just stumbled upon this post. I am searching for similar evidence regarding EU-25 countries. I did some quite extensive web search but did not find a useful average EU-25 figure.

I prefer not to copy the content of the answers here as I should ask permission to people who answered. Why dont’ you join the eGov Community in Linkedin, and look for the answer to my question:
– anybody has EVIDENCE that local government have more interaction with citizens than central government?
Also, look forward to any evidence you have on the topic
best
